Mission:

Our Goals
1. Provide free seeds to you
2. Preserve biodiversity

Our mission is to
preserve the locally adapted organic varieties of heirloom seeds of the Central Coast. We realize the way to truly preserve seeds varieties is not only to store the seeds, but also to ensure that all seeds are planted and grown out on a continual basis. We want to create a living seed library, not a just vault of frozen seeds that people don't see.

We seek to help small gardeners and mid-sized organic farmers gain access to locally adapted organic varieties. We hope to decrease our community’s reliance on large seed companies and are strongly opposed to the patenting of life by genetic engineering giants.

The Demeter Seed Library of UC Santa Cruz is composed of local farmers, gardeners, students, and biologists who believe in the importance of preserving the genetic heritage of our food. To borrow seeds from the seed library become a member by signing up at a seed swap or by contacting library@demeterseedsproject.org.
